Rockford Solar Opportunities
The city of Rockford is actively developing important opportunities for businesses to leverage solar power for its economic and marketing benefits.
Rockford Emerging As Solar Hub
With the opening of the Wanxiang factory in 2009, Rockford is now the home to a major solar photovoltaic production facility. This signifies the beginning of a long-term partnership between Wanxiang America Group, the City of Rockford, Winnebago County, the Greater Rockford Airport Authority and the State of Illinois. Wanxiang Group will be bringing innovative alternative energy technology and new jobs to Northern Illinois, with a project that will initially employ up to 60 full-time workers. As demand grows, the company could expand to 160,000 square feet and 240 workers.
Rockford Solar Incentives
To build upon the opening of the Wanxiang Solar Panel assembly facility and to encourage the use of Wanxiang solar panels, the City of Rockford, with support from Winnebago County and the Greater Rockford Airport Authority, has created the Rockford Global Green Cooperative. The Cooperative is a Green Purchasing Cooperative created for private sector companies that own and occupy real estate located within the Rockford Global TradePark (GTP) Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District #1. Specifically:
“The City of Rockford will reimburse members of the Cooperative which purchase and install Wanxiang solar panels for 50% of the purchase and installation cost from May 1, 2010 through April 30, 2015. From May 1, 2015 through April 30, 2025 the City will reimburse members of the Cooperative which purchase Wanxiang solar panels for 50% of the purchase cost. “Cost” as used in this paragraph means net cost to the member of the Cooperative exclusive of any grant or subsidies received from a third party, such as State or Federal Government.”
